A Shoutout to the SelfKelp Initiative
Kelp forests are something special. They’re visually stunning, and they’re vital to marine life, carbon capture, and coastal resilience. That’s why we’re so inspired by SelfKelp, a local initiative doing great work to bring more attention to the power of seaweed.
Launched by a team of young ocean ambassadors through Ocean Wise’s Ocean Bridge program, SelfKelp is a creative campaign that reframes seaweed as an essential resource.
Through social content, underwater footage, and great storytelling, they’re helping to change how people think about seaweed as a serious tool for climate, community, and culture.
Seaweed Chronicles: A Local Dive into Restoration and Food Culture
Their latest project, a short documentary titled Seaweed Chronicles: From Tide to Table, explores the growing seaweed movement here on the coast.
Seaweed Chronicles is a story about one friend introducing another to his love of seaweed—through diving, farming, cooking, and meeting the people who are shaping BC’s seaweed scene, all through the lens of food.
The film follows a dive-based journey from farm to forest to kitchen, including visits to Moonbay Ocean Farm and Dakini Tidal Wilds, and finishes with a kelp-focused meal led by Ocean Wise ambassador Chef William Lew. It’s a great mix of ecology, food, and BC diving life—all wrapped up in a hopeful, hands-on story.
We had the chance to be part of the film’s recent screening at UBC, where Diving Sports hosted a booth and a prize draw. It was a a great reminder of how many people are excited about what seaweed has to offer—not just to the ocean, but to our way of life outside the ocean.
