PADI Open Water vs Referral vs Discover Scuba: Which One to Choose?
If you’re thinking about getting into scuba diving, you’ve probably come across three options: PADI Open Water, Referral, and Discover Scuba Diving.
They sound similar, but they’re built for completely different goals.
Here’s a clear breakdown so you can choose the right path without wasting time or money.
Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) — Try Diving First
Best for:
People who just want to try diving once before committing.
What it is: A short, supervised experience where you learn the basics and do a controlled dive with an instructor, all in the pool. If the ocean (or even swimming) isn’t your thing, DSD is the easiest way to get started.
Key points:
- No certification
- Minimal theory
- Done in pool or very shallow open water
- Always directly supervised
👉 You’re not becoming a diver, you’re just seeing if you like it. If you’re unsure about diving, this is the safest way to start.
PADI Open Water — Become a Certified Diver
Best for:
Anyone serious about learning to dive and doing it regularly.
What it is:
The full certification course that allows you to dive independently (with a buddy).
You’ll learn:
- Core scuba theory (online modules and classroom)
- Pool water skills
- 4 open water dives (ocean)
What you get:
- International certification
- Ability to rent gear and dive worldwide
- Foundation to progress (Advanced, Dry Suit, etc.)
👉 This is the real entry point into diving. If you already know you’re interested, this is where you should start. Most of our divers in BC go straight into Open Water, especially with cold water training from day one.
🌍 Referral — Split Your Training
Best for:
People who want to train locally but finish in warm water (Mexico, Hawaii, etc.).
What it is:
You complete:
- Theory + pool training here
- Then finish your 4 ocean dives on vacation
Why people choose this:
- Warmer, easier conditions to finish
- Combine training with a trip
- Flexible scheduling
👉 Great option, but only if you actually follow through on your trip. If you’re planning a dive vacation anyway, this is good option.
So… Which One Should You Choose?
Choose Discover Scuba if:
- You’re not sure diving is for you
- You just want a one-time experience
Choose Open Water if:
- You want to become a real diver
- You plan to dive locally (BC) or regularly
Choose Referral if:
- You want to start now but finish somewhere warm
- You already have a trip planned
